Launch of Lula’s candidacy in São Paulo Bruno Ribeiro/VEJA
At least four thousand peopleaccording to the organizers, meet this Saturday, 7th, to launch the candidacy for the presidency of the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) in a convention center in the north of São Paulo. Militants from unions, identity movements and PT, PSB, PSOL, PCdoB, Rede and PV parties.
The atmosphere of the act is one of exaltation to Lula. The public sings battle cries in honor of the PT leader and there are signs asking for the departure of President Jair Bolsonaro while the speeches do not start.
Historical PT leaders such as José Genoíno and Miriam Belchior are among the public, but access to the authorities is restricted by means of barriers that separate party leaders from militants. The president of the PSOL, Juliano Medeiros, another leader who circulated among the public, made no attempt to hide that Alckmin’s presence on the ticket was still not well digested in his party.
Asked by VEJA what would be Alckmin’s role in the election, he replied: “A discreet role, I hope”. He said that all programmatic discussion between PT and PSOL that resulted in support for Lula was done exclusively with PT members. “We didn’t talk to Alckmin”, he emphasized.
