Russia withdrew its main forces from Mariupol.
This was stated at a briefing by Pentagon spokesman John Kirby, reports Ukrinform.
“In general, according to our estimates, most of the Russian ground forces that were sent to Mariupol withdrew and moved north,” Kirby said.
There is now a “small number” of Russian troops concentrated in the city and its environs, which is roughly equal to a couple of battalion tactical groups.”
However, the Russians continue to attack Mariupol, inflicting artillery and air strikes on the city itself and its environs, as well as on the Azovstal plant.
As UNIAN reported earlier, on May 4, the commander of the Azov regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Denis Prokopenko, said that the situation at Azovstal was extremely difficult, but the defenders of Mariupol continued to defend.
According to him, it is already the second day since the enemy broke into the territory of the plant, as a result of which there are heavy bloody battles.
On May 5, Azov noted that on the territory of Azovstal, bloody battles with Russian invaders continued for the third day, again violated the promise regarding the evacuation of civilians.
