Anyone who feels nostalgic when remembering old video games is in luck. The site Jam.gg, which brings more than 100 retro games to be played by PC or cell phone, has just arrived in Brazil.
The platform only requires users to register to access the games. You don’t need expensive consoles, lightning-fast connections or payments to log into Jam.gg. Some of the games available are Metal Slug, Earthworm Jim 2, Top Racer, The King of Fighters ’98 and Windjammers.
In an interview with VEJA, Benjamin Devienne, co-founder and CEO of Jam.gg, said that the trend of valuing old games has a lot to do with the way they were played. “Retro games were about sharing, hence the well-known term ‘couch game’: they were designed to be played in the same room, challenging players to beat the highest score, defeat big bosses together or compete for the cup,” he says. “With the evolution of technology, the arrival of Twitch, Discord and connected game catalogs, this human-to-human connection has lost some of its magic. Our mission is to bring it back and create a social hub for multiplayer lovers.”
During the testing period, the site fell in favor of the Brazilian. Currently, there are more than 500,000 users from the country on the platform, and another 1.5 million from other countries.
According to Devienne, the games market is booming all over the world, but the country is an exponent in this scenario. “The industry has been growing steadily for the last 20 years and is virtually unstoppable,” he says. “Brazil is no stranger to current growth; in fact, it’s one of the fastest growing markets, particularly for mobile gaming, where for more than 7 out of 10 players, mobile is the device of choice.”
So, for those who like old games, Jam.gg is a great opportunity to go back in time. In line with current trends, the platform has everything to be a success in the country.
