The audio series Batman Derpertar arrived on Spotify on Tuesday, 3, and took over, this Friday, the top of the podcast charts in much of the world. In Brazil, the Portuguese version, starring Rocco Pitanga, overtook the already traditional Mano a Mano, by Mano Brown, to take the lead in the ranking. In the United States and Canada, the English version, Batman Unburied, left behind the controversial podcast by Joe Rogan, accused of spreading misinformation about vaccines and covid-19.
With two episodes on the air so far, Batman Awakens is a promising start to Spotify’s partnership with DC, which aims to bring the publisher’s superhero adventures to audio shows. The original screenplay is by David S. Goyer, responsible for the Batman trilogy – The Dark Knight, and was adapted in eight countries: Brazil, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan and Mexico, with its own cast and script.
The effort paid off: by the end of its opening week, the audio series topped the charts in Germany, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, the United Kingdom and India, and appeared in second place in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Japan, New Zealand and Sweden.
In the narrative, a serial killer named The Grim Reaper terrorizes Gotham City, while Bruce Wayne, as a highly empathetic forensic pathologist, has no memory of ever being the controversial bat-watchman.
