The support of the PSD of Gilberto Kassab is one of the most valued assets at the current moment of the presidential race, especially by former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), who has been seeking this alliance, without success, since the beginning of the articulations for the dispute for the Planalto Palace.
Now, his hopes have increased, since Kassab gave up on launching his own candidate, after repeated failures with the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD), the former governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite (who remained in the PSDB), the former governor of Espírito Santo Paulo Hartung and the former mayor of Belo Horizonte Alexandre Kalil (PSD), who preferred to run for governor of Minas Gerais.
And Lula gained an important ally in this effort. Senator Renan Calheiros (MDB-AL) will look for Kassab to convince him to join the coalition headed by PT.
Renan has made an effort to help Lula to expand the alliance around Lula, which for now only has leftist parties (PT, PSB, PSOL, PCdoB, Rede and PV), in addition to Solidarity.
The senator from Alagoas will also meet this Wednesday, 4th, with former president Michel Temer with the same objective: to place the MDB in Lula’s coalition in the first round.
With Temer, who defends Senator Simone Tebet’s own candidacy, the biggest difficulty is the fact that Lula defends the repeal of important measures approved during his administration, such as the labor reform and the spending cap.
With Kassab, the hurt to be overcome is another. The former minister did not like Lula having invited Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) to be his deputy — he wanted the former toucan as a candidate for governor in São Paulo (where he was favorite), with someone from the PSD as his deputy.
Lula has other PSD allies who work for him, such as senators Omar Aziz (AM) and Otto Alencar (BA), but so far this has not been enough to convince Kassab.
Another problem is that there are important people in the PSD closest to President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), such as the governor of Paraná, Ratinho Jr.
