Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, of the STF Nelson Jr./SCO/STF
the minister Luis Roberto Barrosoof the STF, defended this Monday the freedom of expression and the fight against fake news as one of its guarantees.
The magistrate participated in an event on the subject at Fundação Getúlio Vargasin Sao Paulo.
“Freedom of expression is not freedom to say nice things, it also exists to ensure the right of criticism (…) There is a limit at which freedom of expression becomes a risk for the integrity of people, for the integrity of institutions. That’s when it needs to be weighed among other values,” said Barroso.
Regarding the regulation from the media, the minister defended that the measure is necessary to combat “evil” disinformation, which amplifies lies — and which, in turn, ends up compromising freedom of expression.
“On democracy, a truth has no owner. The truth is plural, and there are many points of observation in life, and we must be able to live with those who think differently (…) the power of the truth, of the possible truth”, he concluded.
