Heated first semester made Gol reverse losses, according to balance published this Thursday Ivan Pacheco/VEJA
Airlines resumed full steam operation with the end of restrictions on people’s movement, a measure that affected the airline sector in the last two years due to the health crisis of Covid-19. The sector is now experiencing an increase in the number of passengers, but this movement is also accompanied by enormous inconveniences with delays e cancellations.
The number of passengers jumped from 9.4 million to 17.3 million in the first quarter of the year. The increase in travelers is also reflected in the increase in companies’ profits. THE Gol reversed last year’s losses, posting a net profit of 2.6 billion in the first quarter of 2022, according to a financial result report released this Thursday, 28.
But the movement at airports is also accompanied by delays and cancellations, which increased from 787,700 to 2.2 million. The number of delays and cancellations tripled and delays of more than 4 hours increased more than five times in the same period. The average number of passengers affected by the problem is 1 in 8, according to data from AirHelp, a leading global company in the defense of airline passengers.
Regarding delays, the problem affected 50.2 thousand passengers (one in every 346 passengers) in the first quarter of the year, against 8.9 thousand passengers (one in every 1055 passengers) compared to the same period last year. Cancellations totaled 357.7 (one in 48) in the quarter, well above the 126.3 thousand (one in 75 passengers) in the first quarter of 2021.
This is not the first study to reveal that problems have increased in the sector. A survey carried out by the Federal Government on the airline sector also identified an increase in complaints regarding flight cancellations and refunds. The survey, which considered the period between 2020 and 2021, shows that, of the 101,661 complaints against the three airlines operating in Brazil, 38,667 referred to reimbursement difficulties, 20,430 dealt with flight cancellations and another 11,708 complaints related to the ineffectiveness of the Customer Service (SAC).
